And on to my final pet post of the day.
This is a great story from Deerfield News.
Whitesboro teen’s sewing makes for comfortable cats
She crafts 109 beds for donation to shelter
A Deerfield teenager with a passion for animals recently helped make pets awaiting adoption a little more comfortable.
Summer Naughton, a 13-year-old eighth grader at Whitesboro Middle School, used about four months of allowance money to buy $350 worth of supplies to make beds for the cats at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society.
“I love animals,” she said. “I wanted to do something.”
Summer, who owns four cats, five dogs, a guinea pig, two birds and two snakes, said she had made beds for her own animals and then decided the cats at the shelter would like them, too.
Summer said she saw the cats’ cages on the humane society’s Web site and noticed how uncomfortable they looked, so she decided to make the beds.
She wrote down the names of the cats and information about them in order to get to know them, said Jerry Kraus, public relations and marketing director for Stevens-Swan.
Summer then asked her mother for an advance on her allowance to buy fabric and material to make the beds.
Summer started working on the beds on a Friday afternoon about two weeks ago after finishing her homework at school during the day. She then worked almost non-stop the whole weekend to sew the beds on her own sewing machine before stuffing them.
In three days, she made 109 beds, she said.
“I had to make her go to bed,” her mother, Ellen Naughton said.
Kraus said the Naughtons delivered the beds in 10 huge bags, and he walked them through the shelter so Summer could see the cats.
“It was pretty cool,” she said. “I finally got to meet who I was making the beds for.”
Summer said she hopes her efforts serve as an example for others.
“Maybe other people will help out,” she said. “It’s really important that the animals get homes.”
Kraus said Summer’s efforts, along with those of many area children and teens who have donated to the shelter, are appreciated.
“It’s a wonderful sight for us to see these children coming in,” he said. “It says a lot about the children and also their parents.”
